Course Goals and Objectives:
Graphic Design incorporates a number of different design and computer skills that will challenge your creativity. Throughout the semester we will be focusing on the programs Adobe Illustrator. Here you will learn about the elements and Principles of design in producing a number of completed projects. These projects will range from showing emotion through a visual rather than text form to CD and Poster Designs.
Skills and Goals:
Software:
- Fluency in Adobe Illustrator.
Construction:
- Students develop measuring, cutting, pasting, and other construction skills using paper and mixed media.
Hardware:
- Students will be comfortable using printers, scanners, digital cameras and the computers.
Design:
- Students will display a knowledge of composition and color theory in their own work and in discussing the work of others.
Creativity and Idea Development:
- Students will develop a process for forming good ideas through brainstorming, discussion, and self-evaluation.
Design History:
- Students will gain a basic understanding of the development of visual design and typography.
Career Development:
- Students will learn about careers in design: Graphic Design, Art Director, Page Layout, Advertising and Fine Art Applications.
Digital Portfolio:
- Students will build a collection of design projects which they could use in applying for higher education and job opportunities. They will leave the course with a CD Portfolio of their work.
Rules:
1. Each one of you will abide by the rules that have been laid out by Pinewood.
2. Please follow the dress code so I don’t have to give out violations.
3. Use proper care and maintenance when using digital cameras and computers.
4. You can use other photographers as influences, but copying photographs is plagiarism and is not tolerated.
5. Phones are NOT permitted during class time. The only exception is if it approved for research by the teacher. If a phone is seen out during class time the teacher will ask for it to be put away. At the second offense you will have to hand in your phone to the teacher for the rest of the class. The third offense your phone will be held in the main office for the remainder of the day.
Assessment:
Quizzes and Tests:
- Quizzes and Tests are used to access information such as vocabulary, equipment use and procedures.
Projects:
- Project Evaluations may take the form of group critiques, personal written responses and discussions with the teacher. Projects will also be combined with a rubric for self and teacher evaluations.
Portfolios:
- Portfolio assessment is used to evaluate development over a long time frame. The portfolio consists of the collections of art works, documents and supportive materials pertaining to ideas, processes and products.
Group Discussions and Critiques:
- Group Discussions give insight into the understanding of the class as a whole. They provide an avenue for learning how to discuss art works and help each other to improve ideas and production.
Homework:
Homework will be given regularly and will be expected to be completed in the given time. It will consist of short assignments that are critical to the development of the class project. These assignments will provide an insight into your individual development and understanding of art concepts.
Grading:
Projects: 70% Work Effort: 20% Homework: 10%
