VPA - 1 Syllabus
Course Description:
This is a beginning Art Theory class. Students will focus on learning the elements of design (shape, line, form, value, color, space, and texture) and applying them in art making. Students will become proficient with drawing, painting, and collage materials.
Goals:
• Learn the elements of design and apply them
• Make some interesting art
• Sharpen your skills
• Converse with your peers about music, movies, art, and anything cultural.
Rules:
1. Each one of you will abide by the rules that have been laid out by Pinewood.
2. Please follow the dress code so I don’t have to give out violations.
3. Before you leave, clean up your mess and any mess that is close to you.
4. Tracing is cheating. I know when students trace.
5. Phones are NOT permitted during class time. The only exception is if it approved for research by the teacher. If a phone is seen out during class time the teacher will ask for it to be put away. At the second offense you will have to hand in your phone to the teacher for the rest of the class. The third offense your phone will be held in the main office for the remainder of the day.
Attendance Policy:
- If you miss more than 6 classes you will lose one letter grade for the semester.
- More than 6 absences is considered excessive and will be addressed by the teacher.
Materials:
Students will have the opportunity to use and understand the qualities of the following media:
- A Variety of drawing pencils, Color Pencils, Charcoal, Oil Pastels, Paint, Assorted 3D Materials.

Homework:
Homework will be given regularly and will be expected to be completed in the given time. It will consist of short assignments that are critical to the development of the class project. These assignments will provide an insight into your development and understanding of art concepts. Your homework assignments will be completed in your sketchbooks.
-If you do not turn in your homework you can turn it in late. Each day (not class) it is late you will loose 10%. If it is more than one week late you will not receive credit for the homework assignment.
Final Exam:
The Final Exam is a culminating project which will incorporate aspects of the class and will assess your understanding of the elements of design, art history, skills used through the use of different media and materials, the application of art vocabulary, composition and creative thinking.
Make-up Policy:
If you are absent from school, it is your responsibility to find out any missed assignments including class projects and homework. If you are absent for an extended period of time, I will be happy to make arrangements to send work home.
Grading:
1. Quizzes and Tests: Quizzes and tests are used to access information such as vocabulary, equipment use and procedures.
2. Projects: Project evaluations may take the form of group critiques, personal written responses and discussions with the teacher. Projects will also be combined with a rubric for self and teacher evaluations.
3. Portfolios: Portfolio assessment is used to evaluate development over a long time frame. The portfolio consists of the collection of artworks, documents supportive materials pertaining to ideas, processes and products.
4. The participation grade is based on attendance and how often you stay on task in class. If you have more than 6 absences outside of Pinewood excused activities, you will automatically lose at least 20% of your participation grade.
5. Group Discussions and Critiques: Group discussions give insight into the understanding of the class as a whole. They provide an avenue for learning how to discuss art works, and help each other improve ideas and production.
6. The final will test your knowledge of the elements of design.
